Family-friendly fun in the Wildwoods: Our perfect summer getaway to Wildwood, NJ

If you’re looking for a beach getaway that has something for everyone, add the Wildwoods, New Jersey, to your summer travel list! We recently spent some time in the Wildwoods and had an absolute blast. From relaxing on the beach and riding the famous boardwalk tram to thrilling amusement rides, water parks, mini golf, and some seriously delicious boardwalk treats, there was no shortage of family-friendly fun in the Wildwoods.

The best part? Everything was convenient, making it easy to pack a lot into a short getaway without feeling like we were constantly in the car.

Here’s our Wildwoods itinerary so you can steal it for your next family trip!

Stay in the Wildwoods: Compass Family Resort

Finding the right place to stay can make or break a family vacation, and we were really happy with our experience at Compass Family Resort.

Our room was clean, comfortable, quiet, and spacious, which gave us plenty of room to relax after busy days at the beach and boardwalk. We stayed in a suite with a full kitchen and balcony seating, which was especially convenient for a family. Having a kitchen meant we had the option to prepare some meals or snacks ourselves instead of eating out for every single meal.

The resort also has plenty to keep families entertained right on the property, including a pool, putt-putt, arcade, and games. That’s a huge bonus when you have kids who still have energy after spending hours at the beach!

Another major perk was the location. The resort is just a very short walk from the beach and boardwalk, so we could easily come and go throughout the day. And if you’re traveling with a car, complimentary parking is incredibly convenient.

For us, Compass Family Resort checked all the important boxes: comfortable accommodations, family-friendly amenities, a great location, and easy parking.

Play in the Wildwoods: Morey’s Piers and the Wildwoods Boardwalk

Of course, no trip to the Wildwoods would be complete without spending plenty of time on the boardwalk!

The Morey’s Piers area was one of our favorite parts of the trip. If you’re traveling with a family, there is an incredible variety of things to do. There are rides for kids, teens, and adults, so everyone can find something that gets them excited.

And if amusement rides aren’t enough, the Wildwoods boardwalk is also home to water parks featuring everything from a lazy river to waterslides and a hot fountain pool. It’s an easy way to cool off and spend hours having fun together.

One of my favorite tips for navigating the boardwalk is to take the boardwalk tram. Instead of walking the entire length of the boardwalk—especially after a long day of rides and water parks—you can hop on the tram for a fun and convenient way to get around.

And speaking of attractions, don’t miss Dragon’s Lair Blacklight Mini Golf. It was such a fun change of pace from the rides and water parks. The blacklight setting makes it feel like more than just a traditional round of mini golf, and it’s an activity the whole family can enjoy.

Of course, you can’t visit the Wildwoods without spending time on the beach. The beach is clean, roomy, and wide all along the boardwalk, giving families plenty of space to spread out, build sandcastles, play in the water, or simply relax.

If you happen to visit on a Friday night, check out the fireworks! Watching fireworks over the beach is the perfect way to end a summer day in the Wildwoods, and you can see them from most anywhere along the boardwalk.

Eat in the Wildwoods: Boardwalk Treats You Have to Try

Let’s talk about food, because one of the best parts of a Wildwoods vacation is definitely eating your way along the boardwalk!

We loved the crepes from La Bakerie. They were delicious, and we thought they were reasonably priced—a definite win when you’re traveling with a family and trying to keep everyone happy without spending a fortune.

Then there are the famous Curley’s fries. Because what’s a Jersey Shore boardwalk trip without a basket of fries? Add them to your must-try list.

For a refreshing treat, grab some Polish water ice. It’s creamy, delicious, and exactly what you want after spending time in the summer heat.

Another spot we appreciated was Beachside Ice Cream Parlor and Cafe. Obviously, the treats are a big draw, but there’s another reason families may want to keep this place in mind: it has restrooms and air conditioning for customers.

Anyone who has traveled with kids knows that access to a cool place and a clean restroom can feel like finding an oasis in the middle of a busy summer day!

And if you’re spending the day around the water parks, PigDog Beach and Bar is super convenient for grabbing a meal and sitting down at the water park. Sometimes you just need to stop, refuel, and give everyone a chance to rest before heading back out for more fun.

Why the Wildwoods Are Perfect for Families

What stood out most about our trip was just how much there is to do. A Wildwoods vacation can be as active or relaxed as you want it to be.

You can spend the morning relaxing on the beach, head to the boardwalk for rides and games in the afternoon, cool off at a water park, grab dinner and boardwalk treats, and finish the evening with fireworks.

Or, if your family needs a slower pace, you can spend most of the day at the beach, take a leisurely ride on the tram, play a round of mini golf, and enjoy ice cream while watching the activity on the boardwalk.

That flexibility is one of the reasons the Wildwoods are such a great destination for families.

There’s also something special about the classic Jersey Shore atmosphere. The combination of a wide beach, lively boardwalk, amusement rides, water parks, food stands, games, and that unmistakable summer vacation feeling makes the Wildwoods a place where it’s easy to create family memories.
